General Information

The public transportation system in Berlin is called ‘Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe’ BVG. They provide Buses, the U-Bahn as well as the Tram and work closely together with the S-Bahn.

The transportation system is divided into the three following price categories:
A (within the S-Bahn Ring)
B (outside the S-Bahn Ring, within Berlin)
C (outside Berlin)

For most people coming to Berlin for the first time, the transportation system can be quite confusing. So don’t feel stressed out if you don’t get it at once, you are not alone ;-) Just take your time!

Here are the most important lines:
Ring Bahn S41 and S42
South to North: S1, S2 and S25
West to East: S5, S7, S9, S75

We recommend that you  get a map of the transportation  system available for free at the information points of the BVG. But you can also check it online (choose ‘Network Map of S- and U-Bahn’ on the right hand side under more information).

Journey Planner
The website of the BVG is always helpful when you don’t know how and when to get somewhere. You can just enter your starting and ending address, date and departure or arrival time and you will get some suggestions. Check journey planner.

Tickets & Prices
IIf you are registered at a university you might get a student ticket (so called “Semesterticket”) for one semester valid for all categories A,B,C.
Otherwise there are different possibilities:

You can get the tickets either at a ticket machine, in the bus or at a ticket counter. As experience teaches, most of the people working at the counters unfortunately don’t understand English very well. It might be helpful to take a look at our Basic German or to buy the ticket at a machine.

In general, buses and trains within the city area A and B are going every 5, 10 or 20 minutes, depending on the time of day. During the day departure times are more frequently than at night.

There are different types of buses:

The Metro Buses are characterized by an M and a double-digit number. In the daytime they are going every 10 minutes, at night every 30 minutes.
The Express Buses are characterized by an X and a number. Depending on the bus route, the buses are going every 5 to 20 minutes. They do not operate at night and on Sundays.
The Day Buses are characterized by a triple-digit number. Depending on the bus route, the buses are going every 5 to 20 minutes. They do not operate at night, instead you can use the Night Buses.
The Night Buses are characterized by an N and a number. The Night Buses N1 - N9 replace the U-Bahn at night. In the majority of cases the Night Buses are going every 30 minutes.
